Railway networks play a crucial role in facilitating tourism by providing an affordable, efficient, and reliable mode of transportation for domestic and international travelers. Jos, the capital of Plateau State, is known for its temperate climate, scenic landscapes, and cultural attractions, making it a potential hub for tourism in Nigeria (Adetayo & Yusuf, 2024). However, despite its rich tourism potential, the accessibility of Jos remains a challenge due to poor road infrastructure and limited air travel options. The revival and expansion of railway networks could be instrumental in boosting tourism by improving connectivity, reducing travel costs, and enhancing the overall visitor experience. In many countries, railway transportation has significantly contributed to tourism development by linking remote destinations with major cities, thereby increasing tourist arrivals and promoting local businesses (Musa & Okonkwo, 2023). Given the increasing focus on infrastructure development in Nigeria, assessing the role of railway networks in the tourism sector of Jos is essential to understanding how improved transport services could enhance the city’s attractiveness to tourists.

Statement of the Problem
Despite its tourism potential, Jos has not fully capitalized on its natural and cultural resources due to transportation constraints. The limited road network and high cost of air travel make it difficult for tourists to visit the city, leading to reduced tourist footfall and economic losses for businesses in the hospitality sector (Umar & Adekunle, 2023). Railway networks, if effectively developed and integrated into the city’s tourism strategy, could significantly alleviate these accessibility challenges. However, the role of railway networks in enhancing tourism development in Jos has not been adequately studied, leaving a knowledge gap that this study aims to address.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the impact of railway networks on tourism accessibility and visitor inflow in Jos.

  2. To assess the economic and social benefits of an improved railway system on tourism development in Jos.

  3. To identify challenges and opportunities in utilizing railway networks to boost tourism in Jos.

Research Questions

  1. How do railway networks influence tourism accessibility and visitor inflow in Jos?

  2. What are the economic and social benefits of railway development for tourism in Jos?

  3. What challenges and opportunities exist in leveraging railway networks for tourism growth in Jos?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Railway networks do not significantly influence tourism accessibility and visitor inflow in Jos.

  2. Railway development does not have a significant economic and social impact on tourism in Jos.

  3. There are no significant challenges or opportunities in utilizing railway networks for tourism in Jos.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of railway networks in tourism development in Jos, Plateau State. It will examine how railway connectivity affects tourist arrivals, the economic impact on local businesses, and infrastructure development. Limitations may include data availability on railway passenger traffic and challenges in obtaining insights from transport authorities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Railway Networks: Systems of interconnected railway lines facilitating passenger and cargo transportation.

  • Tourism Development: The growth and improvement of tourism infrastructure, services, and attractions to enhance visitor experiences.

  • Accessibility: The ease with which tourists can reach a destination using various modes of transport.
